"I've been meaning to email to tell you how much the training helped me. I used NVivo extensively in my analysis and don't think I would have finished in time if I hadn't."
--- Market researcher

PRELIMINARY INFORMATION
During all training sessions, participants discuss the qualitative research process as well as the specific capabilities of the software. In all training levels you will learn to:

  • Create a coding structure and code source materials
  • Explore strategies for coding inductively as well as deductively
  • Manage non-text data (audio, video, photographs, etc.)
  • Keep track of emerging thoughts and analytical notes within the project (memos and annotations)
  • Triangulate qualitative data with quantitative variables (age, gender, ethnicity, GPA, Likert Scale responses, etc.)
  • Conduct searches to reveal patterns (and thereby build theories)
  • Generate output in textual or numeric form (narrative reports, tables, charts, etc.)
  • Develop graphic representations (existing/emerging theory, conceptual framework, literature review, social networks, coding structures, etc.)

Equipment: All trainings are held in a conference room and require that you bring your own laptop. Computers may be rented, depending on availability (contact train@queri.com).

Location: All Denver trainings are held at 1675 Larimer, 80202 (addresses in other locations are determined a month prior to the session)

Time: All trainings begin at 9:00am and end at 4:00pm. Lunch is on your own.

Lodging: After you receive a confirmation guaranteeing a space, you may make local hotel arrangements. Because of our small group size, we do not have group rates at local hotels.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION IS PROVIDED AFTER YOU REGISTER

Course Level (See detailed descriptions below)
Beginner NVivo 9 - 1 day($250; student discount of $225)
This training includes a gentle introduction to the primary tools in the NVivo 9 software. These are used by most researchers as they begin their analysis. Emphasis is placed on preparing data, coding, and managing demographic or quantitative information. Attendees may also work on their own data (or a sample data set we will provide) for a portion of the training. Registrants for the beginning session often also register for the intermediate session to be held the following day. Limited to 10 participants.
Intermediate NVivo 9 - 1 day($250; student discount of $225)
This training moves researchers into more advanced tools (queries, links, reports, modeling, etc.) and is suitable for individuals with prior exposure to the software. Participants must possess knowledge/skills regarding the basic tools in the software (coding, managing demographics, and an ability to navigate comfortably in the interface). Attendees may also work on their own data (or a sample data set we will provide) for a portion of the training. Registrants for the intermediate session often also register for the beginning session to be held the prior day. Limited to 10 participants.
Beginning & Intermediate NVivo 9 - 2 days($500; student discount of $450)
The two-day training includes an exploration of all areas of the software and also allows you to work on your own data (or a sample data set we will provide). Each component will be examined in depth. Limited to 10 participants.
Advanced NVivo 9 - 1 day($350; student discount of $325)
This is an intensive and focused training, in which participants work only on their data throughout the entire day. Limited to 6 participants. The Advanced training requires 80 hours of prior use of NVivo and is ideal for:

Researchers who have successfully used NVivo, but wonder if they fully utilized the capabilities of the software.

Qualitative methods instructors who want to create their own training modules with a familiar data set.

Principal Investigators who are familiar with the software and responsible for guiding/supporting others through a research project.

PhD students who are finishing up their analysis but have already coded a significant amount of their data.

After you register for the advanced session, the coach will contact you to discuss your specific research and your goals for the training. The following items will then be crafted into a training that meets the needs of all six attendees: Data types, Classifications, Attributes, Collections, Links, Queries, Reports, Extracts, Models (and the Relationship tool), Externals, Interface with Excel/SPSS or bibliographic databases, and team research issues (such as reliability, geographically dispersed team members, etc.).

It is recommended (although not required) that you send sample documents, a list of codes, and a one-page summary of research objectives to the coach prior to the advanced seminar.
